Examples to locate the date of issue that are difficult to find on some identity documents

Updated over a week ago

It is common for police authorities to request the document's date of issue rather than the expiration date when it comes to guest registration.

The date of issue or date of issue is when the identity document is issued or printed for the first time by the corresponding authority.

It is important not to confuse with the expiration date, which is the legal validity that the document has before it needs to be renewed.

Spain

National Identity Document (DNI)

Where to find the date on the DNI?

First of all, keep in mind that the date is in different places depending on when it was issued. If it is a new or old DNI.

Old documents (before 2015)

  • The date is on the side of the photo, not on the back.

  • In the lower left section there is a box, it is located just below the ID chip.

  • There is the date of issue of the document in 6 digits that refer to the day, month and year in that order. (Example: 010606).

New documents (after 2015)

  • The date is on the side of the photo, not on the back.

  • In the lower right section there is a hologram with the photo of the person in miniature.

  • There is the date of issue of the document in 6 digits that refer to the day, month and year in that order. (Example: 010115).

Residence permit

Unfortunately in all types of residence permits in Spain (work, student, family) the date of issue is not found in the document, in this case the guest must remember the year of issue which is usually between 1, 2 and 5 years in difference to expiration date.
